Cincinnati Coordinates Road and Transit Projects to Manage Traffic Disruptions
The city is directing lane shifts, bridge work and service changes across multiple corridors in 2026.
How we reported this
Cincinnati is directing lane shifts and weekend closures on I-75 while crews address the closed southbound lanes of the Daniel Carter Beard Bridge on I-471, which has shifted roughly 64,000 daily vehicles onto other routes.
The projects coincide with planned transit changes that take effect later this summer. City agencies list the Brent Spence Bridge Corridor Project and the Western Hills Viaduct replacement among the active efforts that require ongoing coordination to keep traffic moving.
Road work spreads across key corridors
The Western Hills Viaduct replacement remains on schedule for a 2030 completion, with crews now focused on foundation work in the Mill Creek valley while the existing structure continues to carry traffic. I-75 North reopened earlier than expected after the Linn Street Bridge demolition, although a separate crash involving semis and a fuel spill produced recent backups on the interstate. The Daniel Carter Beard Bridge southbound closure carries a March target for reconstruction completion.
These efforts occur alongside temporary detours on Cincinnati Metro Route 90 and the removal of service by Routes 21 and 78 at Government Square Area D, directing riders to alternate boarding spots.
Transit service expands while budget pressures persist
Cincinnati Metro plans three new routes, numbered 47, 53 and 18, plus other enhancements that begin August 16, 2026. Construction on the first two Bus Rapid Transit corridors along Reading Road and Hamilton Avenue is scheduled to start this year, with service expected in 2027 on Hamilton Avenue and late 2027 or early 2028 on Reading Road at a projected cost of $300 million. The agency faces a projected $184 million budget deficit as part of its current review.
