Cincinnati Transit Upgrades Trace Path Through Decades of Bottlenecks and Shortfalls

Cincinnati Metro will add three new routes and expand service on August 16, 2026, after collecting public comments during April and May 2026 meetings. The changes arrive as the agency confronts a documented $184 million projected deficit identified in its latest audit.

Local leaders have tracked the I-71/I-75 junction as the second-worst national bottleneck for years, while truck registrations in the Cincinnati region have grown faster than in other Ohio metro areas. That ranking has shaped state-level planning and forced repeated reviews of how SORTA allocates limited funds across existing routes.

Budget pressures shaped route decisions

The city finalized an $80 million allocation for fiscal year 2026 under the Cincy On Track infrastructure plan in late June, directing money toward streets, bridges and transit connections. SORTA officials have cited the same shortfall as the reason they are weighing fare increases or targeted route reductions during the current policy review.

Those fiscal constraints explain why planners selected the specific corridors for Bus Rapid Transit construction that begins this year. The two lines will run along Reading Road and Hamilton Avenue, with projected costs of $300 million and service start dates set for 2027 on Hamilton Avenue and late 2027 or early 2028 on Reading Road.

Public input guided fall adjustments

The new routes numbered 47, 53 and 18 emerged directly from the spring 2026 feedback sessions. They join other enhancements already scheduled for the same August 16 implementation date, all drawn from the same public comment period.
